You May Be at Risk of Gum Disease

Gum disease (or periodontal disease) affects millions of people worldwide every year, and it’s the leading cause of tooth loss amongst adults. However, many people have no idea they have gum disease until they develop loose teeth or severe pain. That’s because gum disease often causes very few symptoms in its early stages, making it easy to overlook until major problems occur.

The Periodontal-Whole Body connection Research has now shown that periodontal disease is connected to a variety of other diseases including heart disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Scientists believe that inflammation may be the basis for the link between the systemic diseases.

Do I need treatment? Losing teeth can significantly impact on your overall health and other aspects of your life including eating and chewing properly, aesthetics and self-esteem. When disease and infection is caught early on, it is much easier and less expensive to treat. Bone infections and tooth loss is often the unfortunate outcome when gum disease is left untreated for too long.

What Can a Periodontist Do? Seeing a Periodontist is the best way to check and treat all cases of Periodontal Disease. Early treatment of mild or moderate gum disease is often successful and you don't have to worry about losing teeth.

With more advanced or severe gum disease, there are various strategies your Specialist Periodontist can use to help stop or slow the progression of the disease. This may involve surgery to access deep pockets, and/or bone and gum regenerative procedures. We will explain these options further should the need arise.
